A dual-rate 4.7/6.5 kbits/s algebraic code excited linear predictive (ACELP) codec is proposed for adapt ive speech communicators, which can d r o p their source ra te a n d speech quali ty under network control i n order t o invoke a more e r ro r resilient modem amongst less favourable channel conditions. Sourcematched Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codecs combined with un-equal ,protection diversitya n d pilot-assisted 16a n d 64 leve l quadra tu re a m p li tude modulation (16-QAM, 64-QAM) a r e employed in o rde r t o accommodate bo th the 4.7 a n d the 6.5 kbits/s coded speech bi ts a t a signaling ra te of 3.1 kBd. I n a bandwidth of 200 kHz 32 t ime slots can b e crea ted , which allows us t o suppor t i n excess of 50 users, when employing packet reservation mult iple access ( P R M A ) .
